Evil Dead (2013) : Summary
n the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.The film opens with a girl (Phoenix Connolly) being captured in the woods by a pair of rednecks (Stephen Butterworth and Karl Willetts). She wakes up tied to a post in a basement, with an old woman (Sian Davis) reading from an ancient book, saying her soul must be saved. The girl’s father Harold (Jim McLarty) is about to light her on fire, and she initally pleads for him to save her but then reveals she is possessed, her skin turning pale and eyes yellow. She is then burned to death before her father shoots her in the head.Some time later, a group of friends is meeting at an old cabin deep in the woods. Mia (Jane Levy) is attempting to detox from an opiate addiction with the support her friends Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Olivia (Jessica Lucas) – a registered nurse. Mia’s brother David (Shiloh Fernandez) and his girlfriend Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore) – a physician also show up David’s showing up surprises Mia, as their relationship became strained since their mother’s hospitalization and subsequent death. David, fearful his mother’s mental illness was genetic and that he might suffer from it, ran away from the situation leaving his younger sister Mia had to tend to her as she died. Mia became addicted to opiates, and the retreat was her latest attempt to attain sobriety. The group finds the cabin has been broken into, and they follow the smell of decaying animal carcasses to a secret cellar under the cabin. Eric finds the book, the Naturom Demonto, and despite repeated warnings scrawled within the its pages, utters incantations from it. Consequently, Mia begins to see images of a girl with pale skin and yellow eyes (Randal Wilson). Later, going through withdrawal, she attempts to escape the woods, but submerges her car in a creek and – in retreating from the water and the possessed girl – is captured and raped by possessed trees.
